INDIA HAS A DISPROPORTIONATELY HIGH BURDEN OF CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASES
  • It has 18% of the world’s population but 32% of the global burden of respiratory diseases.
  • Pollution is the biggest contributor to the respiratory disease burden.
  • A recent survey reflected that 63% patients (mean age 43.6 ± 18.5 yrs.; M: 58.9%) presented to the doctors, were suffering from chronic respiratory diseases (CRD ).
  • The most common respiratory diseases are Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (29.6%), Tuberculosis (TB) (23%), Asthma (22.5%) and Allergic Rhinitis (8.4%). Respiratory disease burden in India is second only to that of ischaemic heart disease.The contribution of chronic respiratory diseases to the total DALYs (disability-adjusted life year) in India increased from 4.5% (95% UI 4.0–4.9) in 1990 to 6.4% (5.8–7.0) in 2016.
